PDF/UA-1 rule 7.1-11: StructTreeRoot entry is not present in the document catalog

Not fixed automatically structure

What veraPDF reports

StructTreeRoot entry is not present in the document catalog

veraPDF rule 7.1-11 = ISO 14289-1:2014 clause 7.1, test 11, checked on PDF object PDDocument.

In Adobe Acrobat’s Accessibility Checker the closest item is “Tagged PDF”.

What the requirement says

The logical structure of the conforming file shall be described by a structure hierarchy rooted in the StructTreeRoot entry of the document catalog dictionary, as described in ISO 32000-1:2008, 14.7

Can it be fixed automatically?

Not fixed automatically. This failure needs the authoring tool or manual remediation; the automatic fix does not change it.

How to fix it by hand

The document needs a correct tag tree (structure). The reliable way is to export from the authoring application with “tagged PDF” / “document structure tags for accessibility” enabled; otherwise the tags are corrected in a PDF editor.
